CBD Doughnuts

And if for once, we who spoil our grandmothers with a nice dish? The Kilogrammes team proposes you a great recipe, which will delight your grandmother for sure!

To start, we opted for a sweet recipe, because they are by far our favorites! That's why we chose to make CBD doughnuts, because it's a recipe that's both greedy and warm, and that everyone generally agrees on, because they can be dressed up with all kinds of sauces. However, for the savory team, it is possible to modify the recipe to make a savory version with ham, mushrooms, cheese, etc.

Before we start the recipe, you know what we're going to do? We're going to tell you the story of the doughnut of course!

The origin of the doughnut

So before we talk about origin, do you know exactly what a doughnut is? If so, congratulations! For the others, we'll explain everything:

The doughnut is a food that can be either sweet or salty. According to the Larousse dictionary, it is a "fried preparation composed of a dough coating a salty or sweet ingredient".

Now, fried foods were very common in Ancient Greece and Rome, and olive oil was used to make this type of frying. The first recipe for doughnuts would have been offered by Apicius (one of the three well-known Apicius) in one of the works of culinary compilation (which are 10 in number) called "De re coquinaria" which means "Culinary art".

Moreover, the word "beignet" comes from the diminutive "beigne", which is a word designating "a bump following a blow" and was used in France in the 13th century, but which persists in some parts of France, especially in the southern part.

And it is the fact that the dough of the doughnut, during the cooking, starts to inflate, which earned him this sweet name.

This pastry is also part of the traditional dishes very present in the Christian religion.

In fact, in Christian countries, before the period of Lent, which is an episode of fasting that lasts 40 days; it was customary to celebrate and eat "fat" before the said period. This is the origin of the "Mardi Gras" festival, which takes place one day before this famous Lenten period. But why choose the doughnut as a dish for Lent you might ask?

Well, since this type of celebration gathered a lot of people, it was necessary to make pastries that would be quick to prepare and above all that they would not cost much.

And secondly, it was the perfect opportunity to use and finish the reserves of butter, oil, eggs, before the fast begins and these foodstuffs expire.

As you can see, the doughnut was the perfect candidate for this type of event, as were waffles and pancakes.

This little history lesson is over, and it sure worked up an appetite! So it's time to get to work on those doughnuts!

CBD Donuts Recipe

At Kilogrammes, we chose the "traditional" recipe, that is to say doughnuts sprinkled with powdered sugar. Afterwards, nothing prevents you from filling them with jam, chocolate, compote, ... in short with what you want!

It is also possible to make them salted. In this case, reduce the sugar in the recipe by half and add a little more salt to the dough. You can also fill this type of doughnut with the salty filling of your choice.

Ingredients

  • 550g of flour
  • 100g powdered sugar (to sprinkle on your doughnuts)
  • 3 eggs
  • 50g of CBD butter
  • 20cl of warm whole milk
  • 1 packet of baker's yeast
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt

Little tip from Kilograms: Caution! Make sure you use baker's yeast and not the baking powderbecause the first one is "living"This is because it contains micro-organisms, which feed on the sugar and release carbon dioxide, making the dough rise. Whereas baking powder is composed of a basic agentoften sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, with a acidic agent (tartaric acid and/or sodium pyrophosphate) and a stabilizer.

Once in contact with moisture, the yeast agents act together, releasing carbon dioxide that causes the dough to rise.

Preparation

There are two ways to introduce CBD into the recipe. Either you make a CBD butter, which you then incorporate, or you infuse previously decarboxylated CBD flowers of your choice into the milk.

It's up to you to decide which method works best for you. We chose the butter because we always have a small plate of it in the freezer (yes, you can put your CBD butter in the freezer to keep it longer!)

  1. Before preparing the doughnut batter, we start by infusing our decarboxylated CBD flowers in whole milk. We chose the Strawnana, for its strawberry/banana flavor. But you can choose the one that speaks to you the most.
  2. Then, mix the sifted flour with the yeast in a bowl.
  3. Then, dig a "well" in the center of the bowl, and add the sugar, eggs and butter cut into strips and the pinch of salt.
  4. Mix your device little by little, while adding a bit of warmed CBD milk. Knead until you get a soft dough, then form a ball and let it rest under a cloth for about 1 hour.
  5. Once the hour is up, roll out your dough on a floured work surface, keeping about 1cm of dough thickness
  6. Cut out circles with a cookie cutter or glass and let stand for another 30 minutes.
  7. Once the second batch is done, heat your frying oil and dip a ball of doughnut dough into the hot oil. Wait a few seconds, then flip them over once they are golden brown.
  8. Drain your doughnuts on a piece of paper towel to absorb the excess oil.
  9. Finish your recipe by sprinkling powdered sugar over your doughnuts.

All you have to do is eat them! You can eat them immediately after cooking(be careful not to burn yourself!) or wait for them to cool down a bit.

Remember to make a nice package to take to your grandma's house, because yes, we are making this basic recipe for her!

You can also make a little icing, or buy the icing pens already made, and put a nice little note on the donuts.

Let's get to the healthy part of the recipe now!

CBD Donut Recipe

The benefits of CBD donuts

So you may have guessed it, but doughnuts are not super light in terms of calories. It's not for nothing that some ancestors ate them before Lent!

But it is good, both psychologically and physically, to eat things that make us happy. So we are not saying to eat exclusively pastries, although the idea may seem appealing, but that doughnuts can be part of a balanced diet.

Is the doughnut a healthy food?

Although the cooking is the real "worry" of this recipe, since frying is one of the greasiest cooking methods available in the kitchen. But you can find an alternative, notably by cooking your pretty doughnuts in the oven. Of course, the result will be a little less "greedy", since it is the fat (and the sugar) that makes the food appetizing, but they will still be very good.

In addition, you can limit the amount of sugar, by replacing the sugar in the recipe (albeit in small amounts) with a different sweetener, such as honey or agave syrup, which have a much stronger sweetening power, so you can use less, while still retaining that fabulous sweet taste.

CBD to relieve grandma's pain

As for the CBD they contain, it's a little health bonus.

Indeed, cannabidiol is a fantastic molecule, which will be able to help your grandmother to relieve some pains, like rheumatism or osteoarthritis for example, which affect many elderly people. But it will also be able to relieve its transit and to help it to decrease its sleep disorders.

A good little boost for grandma, and then also for those who will taste your beautiful CBD donuts.

Be careful though, if you bring them to a family meal, if there are children or pregnant/lactating women, remember to warn them about the CBD content. And why not make doughnuts with CBD and doughnuts without, so that everyone enjoys your delicious pastries?

Conclusion

That's it for this tasty recipe! Feel free to send us your accomplishments via PM on our Instagram account, we're licking our chops just imagining them!
